Open data and licensing

Part of our data comes from OpenStreetMap. The Open Database License asks us to pass that part on, so here it is: a single machine readable file, free of charge, with no account and no conditions attached.

What is in the file

Ferry crossings and ferry terminals taken from OpenStreetMap, limited to the ones that lie on the cycling networks in the route.network platform.

756 features

279 crossings as LineString and 477 terminals as Point, in one GeoJSON FeatureCollection of about 348 kB.

Traceable to the source

Every feature carries osm_type and osm_id, so each one can be looked up in OpenStreetMap itself.

OpenStreetMap fields only

Name, operator and the complete original tag set. Nothing of ours: no route names, no node numbers, no internal identifiers.

Generated 6 September 2026

Coordinates are WGS 84 (EPSG:4326), longitude before latitude, as GeoJSON prescribes. Extracts covering the Netherlands and Belgium.

How the selection was made

The licence allows an alteration file or a description of the method instead of the whole source database. This is that description, so you can reproduce the set.

From the OpenStreetMap extracts for the Netherlands and Belgium we took the ways and relations tagged route=ferry and the nodes tagged amenity=ferry_terminal.

A crossing is kept when it runs within 25 metres of an active cycling network segment. Beyond that distance the population changes character: the share of crossings tagged bicycle=yes falls from 92% in the first two metres to 37% between 25 and 50 metres.

A terminal is kept when it lies within 50 metres of a crossing that was itself kept. Terminals are not measured against the route, because they sit on the bank where the cycle path already ends.

Two exclusions on top of distance. Crossings tagged bicycle=no are left out, because OpenStreetMap states plainly that a bicycle cannot come along; a crossing with no bicycle tag at all is kept, since knowing nothing is not the same as no. And crossings longer than 50 kilometres are left out: the North Sea ferries start at a quay that a cycle route happens to pass, but they are not a link in a node network.

Licence

© OpenStreetMap contributors. This data is available under the Open Database License 1.0. Any use of it, and of anything made from it, is subject to that licence.

If you show this data, or something derived from it, the licence asks three things of you: name OpenStreetMap as the source, keep the derived database under the same licence, and offer that database on to the people who see your work. Attribution on its own is not enough. The full text is at opendatacommons.org and the OpenStreetMap side of it at openstreetmap.org/copyright.

Only the file on this page is OpenStreetMap derived. Our own route networks, nodes and points of interest have their own sources and are not covered by this licence, nor are they part of the download.

Something wrong in the data?

A ferry that no longer runs, or one that is missing, is best corrected at the source: anyone can edit OpenStreetMap, and the correction reaches us with the next import. For anything about this file or this page, write to info@route.network.
